Aomori Nebuta Festival

Recently, I had the chance to visit the Aomori Nebuta Museum “Wa-Rasse” and learn about one of Japan’s most exciting and vibrant festivals—the Nebuta Festival. Although I have never had the opportunity to experience the actual festival in person, the museum provided an incredible insight into the history, traditions, and artistry behind the floats that are the heart of the event.

The Aomori Nebuta Festival is one of Japan’s most famous summer festivals, celebrated in Aomori City. It features beautifully illuminated, giant floats known as Nebuta, which are decorated with intricate designs inspired by historical and mythical figures. The festival fills the streets with music, dance, and an energetic atmosphere that captivates everyone who attends.

At the Wa-Rasse Museum, I was able to get a close look at these magnificent floats. The museum showcases how the Nebuta floats are made and highlights their cultural significance. It was fascinating to see the craftsmanship involved and learn how the festival has evolved over the years.

The Aomori Nebuta Festival takes place annually from August 2nd to 7th. The event attracts thousands of visitors who gather to witness the procession of these stunning floats through the city.

August 2nd (Saturday) – 3rd (Sunday)	Children’s Nebuta and Large Nebuta Parade (7:00 PM -)
August 4th (Tuesday) – 6th (Thursday)	Large Nebuta Parade (6:45 PM -)
August 7th (Friday)	Day Parade (1:00 PM -) and the grand finale with fireworks & sea procession (7:15 PM – 9:00 PM)

The festival is held in the heart of Aomori City, with major streets like Shimmachi Street, Hakkou Street, National Road, Heiwa Park Street, and Honmachi Temple Street hosting the parade. The event is easily accessible and great for solo travelers or anyone looking to dive into a unique cultural experience.

The Aomori Nebuta Festival is more than just a parade—it’s a celebration of Japanese art, history, and community. The floats themselves are spectacular, and the vibrant atmosphere, complete with traditional music and lively dances, makes for an unforgettable experience.
