📍 Introduction

Located in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, Takayama is a town where the charm of old Japan still remains.
Narrow streets lined with traditional wooden houses, sake breweries, and shops make it a perfect destination for a slow, mindful walk — especially for solo travelers.

The Iconic Red Bridge (Nakabashi)

Crossing the bright red Nakabashi Bridge, I paused to admire the reflection of the town in the clear river below.
Surrounded by greenery and wooden houses, this spot perfectly captures the essence of Takayama — traditional yet alive.

Sanmachi Street — The Heart of Old Takayama

Wandering through Sanmachi Street, I felt transported back in time.
Dark wooden houses stood close together, their lattice windows casting soft shadows on the street.
Local shops sold miso, pickles, and sake — the air filled with comforting aromas.
Even on a weekday, there were enough people to make it lively, yet it never felt crowded — just the right balance for solo travelers.

Lunch at Nakayama-sou — Local Takayama Ramen

For lunch, I stopped by Nakayama-sou, a local favorite ramen shop known for its Takayama-style ramen.
There was already a long line when I arrived, so I joined the locals and waited for about 30 minutes.
The wait was absolutely worth it — the ramen had a rich soy-based broth with thin noodles, and the tender char siu melted in my mouth.
It was the kind of simple, nostalgic flavor that warms you from the inside.

Takayama Jinya — A Glimpse into Edo-Era Life

The final stop was Takayama Jinya, Japan’s only remaining government office from the Edo period.
The site is surprisingly large, with rooms carefully preserved and labeled — the kitchen, tea room, toilet, back entrance, and more.
Walking through each section felt like stepping into daily life from centuries ago.
It wasn’t just historical — it was fun to explore, imagining how people once lived and worked here.
The long corridors, the tatami rooms, and the sound of footsteps on wooden floors created a quiet yet vivid connection to the past.
